Yes, cliche, I know.

I have been sitting here all morning watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, doing my best to avoid everything on the never ending breakfast buffet so that I can achieve my eating goals at dinner later. Today is a truly great American holiday. It offers everyone the chance to reflect on what they are thankful for and celebrate a delicious hearty meal with family and friends.

There is also a great leadership lesson to be drawn from the celebration of Thanksgiving. While you reflect on what you are thankful for, be sure to think of what you are thankful for as a leader.

As Dale Carnegie says in How to Win Friends and Influence People: “Be quick in your approbation and lavish in your praise.”

As a leader, it is key to give honest appreciation to those who help you accomplish your goals. Whether it is your most trusted adviser, your work horse, or someone who does something very small, giving thanks and showing your gratitude goes a long way. What will you give thanks for today?
